Earlier today, Samsung Electronics announced what it's calling the world's highest-density hard disk
drive for desktop systems.
The new device measures the standard-size form factor of 3.5 inches and offers up to 2 Terra Bytes (2,000
Gigs) of storage capacity.
The EcoGreen F4, or 4-FEG is made with three 667 GB platters. Samsung said the platters can store up to 880
hours of DVD video or up to 500,000 MP-3 songs, or enough storage capacity for up to 3 billion books of 300 pages
each.
This is a first in the industry. The internal F4-EG drive offers faster performance, lower power consumption
and better reliability and durability than older EcoGreen hard drives produced in the past year.
The new hard disk drive includes a 3.0 Gbit per sec SATA interface, Native Command Queuing and a 32 MB buffer
memory for faster read and write access.
Samsung says it eliminates halogen and brominated flame-retardant from the 4-FEG circuit board, making
the drive more eco-friendly. For example, the new hard drive fully meets RoHS (Restriction of the Use of Certain
Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) regulations which are applied worldwide, according
to the South Korean manufacturing giant of consumer electronics and appliances.
Samsung's new F-4EG also uses the company's low noise operation technology SilentSeek and NoiseGuard to
achieve quiet system operation. Both of these technologies are now patented.
In the past, Samsung's previous EcoGreen F3 hard drive also offered 2 Terra Bytes capacity, but on four 500
GB platters each.
The new three-disk F4EG improves standby performance by almost 20 percent and uses about 23.2
percent less power in standby mode than the F3EG, the company added.
I.C. Park, vice president of storage for Samsung's Semiconductor Business says "Storage-hungry multimedia
workers, graphics professionals, gamers and home PC users continue to increase the amount of video, music,
photo and other personal data they store and back-up on their PCs everyday."
"The F4EG really delivers all the benefits of a low-power drive yet features top performance quality, is
environmentally friendly and will be offered at a reasonable cost when compared to lower-capacity hard drives
of similar performance," added Park.
The Samsung F4-EG drive is available in 1.5 TB and 2 TB capacities and the retail price will start at $119.99
for the 1.5 TB model and at $149.99 for the 2 TB version.
Initial shipments are scheduled to begin around September 10, Samsung said.
Park added "Samsung is committed in delivering quality electronic devices that are durable and easy to use to
the consumer market as well as to businesses of all sizes. We are continuing to innovate in consumer as well as
industrial electronics and we will increase our R&D spending by at least 5 percent in 2011 and 2012.
